Course Description This course introduces the fundamental concepts in Chinese medicine to students who are interested in a general understanding of the basic theories, working principles, methods for health preservation and disease healing in Chinese medicine. The course comprises an introduction to the five key areas in Chinese medicine including the basic theories, methods of diagnosis and treatment, acupuncture and moxibustion, Chinese medicinal materials, and Chinese herbal formulary. This general education module will also include some practical tutorials to demonstrate diagnostic methods, and classic treatments, which include tongue observation, pulse taking, acupuncture and cupping. The medium of instruction for the course is English.

Professor LIN Zhixiu is the Associate Director and Professor at the CUHK School of Chinese Medicine. He received his PhD in Pharmacognosy from King College, University of London and BSc in Chinese Medicine from the Guangzhou University of Chinese Medicine. His main research interests are in the areas of herbal pharmacology focusing on pancreatic cancer, psoriasis, eczema, Alzheimer’s disease and Parkinson’s disease; clinical trials of Chinese medicine on common diseases including atopic dermatitis, psoriasis, Alzheimer’s disease, overactive bladder and macular edema; and systematic reviews on effectiveness of acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine. In his spare time, Prof. Lin loves hiking and cooking.
Dr. LIONG Ching is the Head of Clinical Division at the CUHK School of Chinese Medicine. She specializes in respiratory disease of Internal Medicine. Dr. LIONG is very enthusiastic in education and is skilful in applying electronic resources in Chinese medicine teaching. She is also one of the first instructors involved in the English teaching of the Chinese medicine Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) launched by the CUHK Faculty of Medicine.
Dr. HA Eun-hae is an Assistant Lecturer at the CUHK School of Chinese Medicine. She graduated from the Beijing University of Chinese Medicine majoring in Chinese Medicine and went on to receive her Master and PhD degrees there in Acupuncture and Moxibustion. Her teaching foci are undergraduate courses in acupuncture and moxibustion, as well as the meridian system.
