Joint MArch Studio ‘Atavist Anatomies’ by Prof. Kristof Crolla presents at ETH Zurich

MArch 1 students in G10 Studio visited the ETH in Zurich, Switzerland, at the end of May 2016 under the guidance of Prof. Kristof Crolla to present their final studio projects to a jury of local professors and experts. Titled ‘Atavist Anatomies’, the joint studio was organised in collaboration with the ETH, focusing on Guangdong’s abandoned industrial infrastructure and its potential for the cultural redevelopment of the region.

The CUHK side emphasised heavily the exploration of space defining opportunities given by complex geometry, while investigating how digital fabrication technology can radically transform the way our built environment materialises today. The joint studio with the ETH was taken as a unique opportunity to visit their world-leading research labs in the field of computation and robotics. During the visit, Prof. Dr. Phillippe Block introduced his boundary-breaking digital work exploring optimised compression structures, and Prof. Dr. Fabio Gramazio presented his latest research on the applications of robotics in architecture.

In addition to the ETH visit, the CUHK group toured the city of Zurich and the broader region to explore numerous architectural highlights. These included the Hungerburg Funicular and Bergisel Ski Jump in Innsbruck by Zaha Hadid Architects, and the vernissage of Venice Architecture Biennale 2016.
