Alumni Vince Yiu and Jessie Wong win HKIA Awards
Date & Time
30.11.2020Our graduates Yiu Kam Po Vince (MArch 2010) and Wong Lok Hei Jessie (MArch 2020) have received the Honorable Mention at the HKIA Young Architect Award 2019 and the HKIA Student Medal 2020, respectively.
With his design proposal “An Assemble of Tailor-made Homes: First Affordable Housing Pilot Scheme in Tsz Wan Shan”, Vince suggests a semi bottom-up design process instead of the conventional top-down one. The government or developers shall focus on designing decent communal spaces by making use of prefabricated components, while individual occupants work with architects and designers to create their ideal spatial arrangement or façade treatment of their apartments at a reasonable cost. When Modular Integrated Construction (MiC) becomes widely adopted, the cost of each flat will be lowered. Occupants can then decide and attach their MiC flats at a district with a better quality of communal infrastructure.
Jessie, under the supervision of Prof. Thomas Chung, explores the idea of regenerative architecture in her thesis “Seaweed Machine: Regenerative Architecture at Tung Ping Chau”. The project adopts the metaphor of machine to connect different stages of seaweed manufacturing and processing to recycle CO2, converting the north-easternmost offshore island of the New Territories into a seaweed-sustained enclave that can generate energy and food.
Organised by the HKIA and Asian Cultural Council Hong Kong, the annual HKIA Young Architect Award aims to recognise the talents and contributions of emerging architects in Hong Kong. As for HKIA Student Medal, it is a yearly award which acknowledges architecture graduates who possess the best academic performance, design achievements and innovations.
The One University One Village (1U1V) team has received HKIA Medal of the Year Outside Hong Kong and Special Architectural Award – Social Innovation on the same occasion. Learn more about this winning project here.
