GENERAL INFORMATION
Prof. Jiang-King received her doctorate degree in linguistics from the University of British Columbia, Canada. She joined CUHK in September 1996, starting as an Assistant Professor in the department of Chinese Language and Literature before joining the department of Modern Languages and Intercultural Studies. She was one of the founding members of the department of Linguistics and Modern Languages in 2004. Her research interests include theoretical phonology, prosodic morphology, and language documentation. She has undertaken 8 research projects funded by RGC and CUHK as the Principal Investigator. The completed project of "Tonal Asymmetry: An Online Bilingual Database of Chinese Dialects" is the first and largest database of its kind. She has published over 70 research outputs, including a single-authored book, 14 journal articles and book chapters, and over 60 conference papers. She served previously as the Vice-President of the Linguistic Society of Hong Kong and on the editorial boards of Journal of Chinese Linguistics and Language Science and Technology Monograph Series.
Prof. Jiang-King is a dedicated teacher. She has taught a wide variety of courses ranging from the area of her expertise in Phonetics and phonology and Language Survey in the Field to her “side-dishes” such as Introduction to Language, Exploring Grammar: Mandarin, and Linguistic Application and Information Technology. She was awarded the Faculty of Arts Outstanding Teaching Award in 2008, 2010, and 2011, and was invited to deliver a speech in the ceremony of the Faculty of Arts Outstanding Teaching Award held in March 2011. Prof. Jiang-King was invited several times by Peking University, Nankai University and Fudan University to give Seminars and lectures in the Summer Institute of Linguistics in China.

A speech delivered in the ceremony of Faculty of Arts Outstanding Teaching Awardheld in March 19th 2011
Dear students, colleagues, and guests:
I would like to share with you an incident which inspired me and gave me the definition of a good teacher. It was 17 years ago when I was a Ph.D. student at the University of British Columbia in Canada and my elder daughter was attending the U-Hill elementary school. One day I noticed that my daughter was doing her home work. It was unusual because elementary schools in Canada do not give little children homework. I was surprised when I saw how engaged my daughter was in her project: The lion poster. She drew a family of lions comprising a lion, lioness with three cubs, and a map on which she highlighted where lions still live today. She began the introduction with a sentence that I thought was very impressive for a 9-year-old girl: “called king of beasts, the lion is a well-known symbol of power and beauty.” I thought at that time that my daughter must be a genius. It turned out that she wasn’t. At the end of that school year all parents were invited to my daughter’s class performance. When I entered my daughter’s classroom, I was shocked as I saw the walls covered by amazing posters. There is a wide range of topics, such as “the history of aboriginal Indian in British Columbia”, “the development of the computer”, so on and so forth. I couldn’t tell which one was best because all of their works were creative and wonderful. In my own culture, students are always ranked by their scores and there is only one student who ranks No. 1 in a class. But in my daughter’s class, there was no No. 1 because all of them were excellent! At that moment I realized what defined a good teacher. Regardless of what level someone is teaching at, a good teacher should be able to stimulate students’ learning interest, inspire students’ creativity, and give every student a happy and rewarding learning experience. In my opinion, my daughter’s teacher Dan had achieved all of them, and I wanted to become a teacher like him. Since then, Dan has been a model teacher for me in my teaching career. Last year Dec. 1st was a day I will never forget. It was the last class of my course and it was my 55th birthday. My students gave me a present. It was a notebook with an elaborately designed cover. On the first page, beside my picture, my students wrote: “to the teacher we love most”. Each page contained a small picture of a student and the words he or she wrote to me. Each student expressed the things that touched them when they took my course in the past years, and all students thanked me for giving them a joyful and rewarding learning experience at CUHK. That night I couldn’t stop my tears from running while I read their words. It is the most precious gift I have ever received because no one can buy it from anywhere. Today, I would like to thank Dan, my daughter’s elementary school teacher, for giving me inspiration on the definition of a good teacher. I would like to thank all the students I have taught at CUHK because it is them who make my life meaningful.
Thank you!
