Recapping the Academic Seminar “考證──從廟堂到江湖:一副嘉靖青詞對聯的故事” conducted by Prof. PUK Wing Kin on 25 October 2019

Prof. PUK Wing Kin accidentally found that a Qing Ci (青詞) recorded in Wanli Anecdote Works written by SHEN Defu of the Ming Dynasty was almost identical with a couplet hung in the lounge of a triad society displayed at the Hong Kong Police Museum as recorded in W. P. Morgan’s book Triad Societies in Hong Kong. This aroused his interest in studying the secret societies since the Ming Dynasty.  Prof. PUK explained that many senior government officials were advocates of Qing Ci during Ming’s Jiajing period. Through the works of XIAO Yishan, LUO Ergang and Dian H. MURRAY, Prof. PUK discovered four variations of couplets used by the triad societies, which showed connections between them and the government.  Prof. PUK believed that apart from the evidence found from the literature, there appeared to be a close relationship between the government and secret societies based on the similarity of rites between Hung Men, a secret society and the government.
