從前有紮根鄉土的社會，現在只有尋根的人們。我有興趣的鄉土陸續成為歷史，我有興趣的普通人是近代無中生有的產物。不要誤會：我並是不認為現在沒有鄉土社會，以前也不是沒有普通人。只是我們把自己放入歷史，在國家與國民的語言及形象之中，逐漸習慣了不言而喻的日常生活，失去了鄉土，只剩下尋根的觀念與輿論。我有興趣以歷史人類學的取向探求歷史，結合歷史文獻與田野經驗，在歷史現場讀史，聽無史之人發聲。這個發現之旅的極限何在，我還不知道。歷史在繼續，我的腳步也將繼續。
