公眾考古學：考古活動的社會、經濟和文化價值

This course introduces students to the wide range of areas in which archaeology has an impact outside the academic areas of archaeological study. It aims to examine the development and planning of archaeological presentation, and issues connected with maintenance of the archaeological resource; the role of legislation in archaeology; the ‘values’ of archaeology in society; and the complex interrelationships between society, politics and economics that provides the framework within which archaeology exists.

Course Lecturer : CHAU Hing-wah 鄒興華
Chau Hing-wah is currently the Curator (Archaeology) of the Hong Kong Museum of History. He acquired his BA at the University of Hong Kong in 1983, and his MA in field archaeology at the Institute of Archaeology, University College London in 1988. Since he joined the Antiquities and Monuments Office as an Assistant Curator II in 1985, he has been working in the field of archaeology for about two decades. He has taken charge of over 150 archeological field projects in Hong Kong including the Second Territory-wide Archaeological Survey of Hong Kong from 1996 to 1998, and the large-scale rescue excavation at Tung Wan Tsai on Ma Wan which was awarded one of the ten most significant archaeological discoveries in China in 1997.

The evaluation is based on:
(1) Attendance and participation in classes (20%)

(2) Paper on case study (30%)
Lecture 5 will introduce the many archaeological works associated with the redevelopment of the former Kai Tak Airport and its surrounding area in the Kowloon Bay. After the lecture, students are required to write a research paper (not less than 3,000 words) on the conservation and development of archaeological heritage discovered therein in the past two decades. The paper should be submitted on or before 31 Oct 2020
Topic: 九龍灣舊啓德機場及鄰近地區發現的考古遺存應如何保存？可否發展成為考古公園？如何聯同區內其他古蹟發展文物旅遊？保育與發展之間應如何取得平衡？

(3) Term paper (50%)
Choose one of the following topic issues and write a research paper within 5,000 words. The paper should be submitted on or before Dec. 12, 2020.

未有夾附簽署妥當的聲明的作業，老師將不予批閱。

學生只須提交作業的最終版本。

學生將作業或作業的一部份用於超過一個用途（例如：同時符合兩科的要求）而沒有作出聲明會被視為未有聲明重覆使用作業。學生重覆使用其著作的措辭或某一、二句句子很常見，並可以接受，惟重覆使用全部內容則構成問題。在任何情況下，須先獲得相關老師同意方可提交作業。
