Research summit gathers experts on health-related emergency and disaster risk management

Led by Prof. Emily Chan (1st row, 2nd right), the Research Summit on Health-Related Emergency and Disaster Risk Management provides a platform for networking between senior and early career academics.

Supported by the CUHK Research Summit Series and the Mok Hing Yiu Charitable Foundation, the Collaborating Centre for Oxford University and CUHK for Disaster and Medical Humanitarian Response (CCOUC) organised a Research Summit on Health-Related Emergency and Disaster Risk Management (H-EDRM), in collaboration with participants of the WHO Thematic Platform for Health Emergency and Disaster Risk Management Research Network, at CUHK during 9 to 10 July 2018.

The summit was organised with six cross-cutting themes, namely Global Strategic Framework, Climate Change and Planetary Health, Practices on Disaster Management, Community Empowerment, Partnership in Action, and Defining and Communicating Disaster Risks. More than 10 global experts and veterans on H-EDRM were invited to share their knowledge and experience in H-EDRM research with over 40 advanced PhD students, early faculty members and frontline practitioners in the forefront of H-EDRM research and practice from Bhutan, Canada, mainland China, Hong Kong, India, Malaysia, the Philippines, Taiwan, Romania and the US.

Global experts are brought to CUHK to exchange their ideas in H-EDRM research.

This research summit showcased CUHK’s research strength and its leading role in the research field of H-EDRM. Besides, it signified CCOUC’s commitment in strengthening collaborations in this multidisciplinary field which crosses the boundaries of emergency and disaster medicine, disaster risk reduction, community health resilience, health system resilience, and health impact of climate change.
