Recapping the academic seminar “Mapping Land in the Ming-Qing Period” conducted by Prof. CHEUNG Sui Wai on 16 October 2015.

Prof. CHEUNG Sui Wai’s detailed review on the research of Fish Scale Registers and Yellow Books revealed that there was never an actual national land survey executed in Ming-Ching period. Advanced tools or skills such as triangle measurement, was never applied in land survey to achieve accuracy and efficiency. Although land was closely related to taxation, land data were often the result of voluntary negotiations or struggles between landlords and local officials. His talk inspired the reconsideration of land survey and management in modern China and Asian colonies.
