Recapping the “Advanced Workshop on Historical Anthropology 2018” held on 20-27 August 2018 in Suichang, Zhejiang Province

The “Advanced Workshop on Historical Anthropology 2018” was held on 20–27 August 2018 and hosted by the CUHK-SYSU Historical Anthropology Research Center, Institute of Humanities and Social Sciences of Peking University, Local History Documents Compilation and Research Center of Zhejiang University, Suichang County People’s Government and other institutions. The work team, led by Prof. HE Xi (CUHK) and Prof. DU Zhengzhen (Zhejiang University), conducted the preparation and organisation of workshop. Prof. David FAURE, Wei Lun Research Professor of History, CUHK was invited to deliver the keynote speech. Prof. FAURE and Prof. HE were also invited as mentors to present lively lectures and give instructions in the fieldwork to the students. Meanwhile, Ms. LIU Yichen, a PhD student of the Department, together with more than 20 young scholars, participated in the workshop.

This workshop continued the traditions of the past, combining documents reading and fieldwork, including 12 lectures and three days of fieldwork. More than 20 scholars from Peking University, Renmin University of China, Fudan University, Zhejiang University, Xiamen University, SYSU, NCTU, NanChang University and Shenzhen University were invited to act as fieldwork advisors and share their experience and understanding of historical anthropology through lectures. In addition to the lectures, the participants conducted field investigations in Dushan Village, Wangcunkou Town, Shijian Town and Changli Village of Suichang County.

The Advanced Workshop on Historical Anthropology is not only an inheritance of traditions, but also a new beginning. It has enabled participants to broaden their horizons, raise new questions and gain new inspiration. The workshop was satisfactorily concluded subsequent to a fruitful exchange of experience and ideas among the participants.

Recapping the Academic Seminar “To Kill or Not to Kill? Oxen and Beef-eating in Modern China” conducted by Prof. POON Shuk Wah on 12 October 2018

Prof. POON Shuk Wah explored the changing perception of cattle slaughter in Chinese society from Western cultural influence. She pointed out that the controversy of profit-driven “killing” and traditional cultural norm of “not to kill” cattle was a result of changing attitudes towards beef-eating, development of transportation and meat-preserving technology since the early 20th century. Japan, China’s neighboring country, however, adopted a different strategy. Through the importation of beef and introduction of various means to popularise beef consumption, Japan effectively eased social conflicts on “kill” and “not to kill” cattle. Prof. POON argued that a society’s classification system determined whether an animal could be eaten or not.
