Background
The Belt and Road Initiative, unveiled by Chinese President Xi Jinping in 2013, aims to promote regional connectivity,
economic cooperation, cultural exchanges, and mutual learning among countries along two ancient economic corridors.
An action plan,
Vision and Actions on Jointly Building Silk Road Economic Belt and 21st-Century Maritime Silk Road,
was put forward in March 2015 by the National Development and Reform Commission,
the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and the Ministry of Commerce. The Initiative is open to all countries and to international and regional organisations.
The plan calls for policy coordination, facilities connectivity, unimpeded trade, financial integration,
and the forging of people-to-people bonds through multilateral mechanisms and multilevel platforms.
Such cooperation is based on the following principles: peaceful coexistence, openness to cooperation, harmony and inclusivity, respect for market forces, and mutual benefit.
Conference Objectives
The Academia International Conference on Economic and Financial Cooperation: Hong Kong and the World under the Belt and Road Initiative is a two-day event (15–16 December 2016) co-organised by the Central Policy Unit and the Hong Kong Institute of Asia-Pacific Studies.
It will bring together scholars, policy-makers, members of think-tanks, and other stakeholders from Hong Kong, Mainland China,
the Belt and Road countries, and other countries all over the world, to share research and exchange ideas.
The objectives of the conference are:
- To understand the overall potentialities of economic and financial cooperation in the Belt and Road regions;
- To study the implementation, challenges, and implications of specific development or investment project opportunities
in the Belt and Road regions;
- To utilise Hong Kong’s special economic, financial, and professional platform in helping competitive enterprises
in the Belt and Road regions to “go global” and achieve greater synergies;
- To foster and strengthen various academic, business, cultural, and social linkages between China and the Belt and Road countries,
with special emphasis on Hong Kong’s special roles, functions, and contributions; and
- To lay the groundwork for the formation of a Belt and Road academic network in Hong Kong.
