ADMISSION (2021-22 INTAKE)

 

Introduction

The MPhil-PhD in Social Welfare Programme is a research-oriented programme. Students may research an area of career/personal interest to them. Students have to indicate in the application their intention to pursue either the MPhil (Master of Philosophy) stream or the PhD (Doctor of Philosophy) stream. The Programme offers both full-time and part-time study modes.

 

Programme of Study

PhD Stream

Study modes available

Full-time: 36 months (with an existing research Master's degree) or
  48 months (without a research Master's degree)
Part-time: 48 months (with an existing research Master's degree) or
  64 months (without a research Master's degree)

Successful applicants will be admitted as PhD Pre-candidacy students first and will progress to becoming PhD Post-candidacy students upon satisfactory completion of all the candidacy requirements within a limited time frame as stipulated by the Graduate School. Candidacy requirements include:

  • 4 lecture courses (2 required research methodology courses and 2 elective courses)
  • Thesis Research courses
  • Candidacy examination
  • Submit a thesis research proposal and pass the oral defence of the proposal

After advancing to the PhD Post-candidacy level, students will have to submit a research thesis and attend an oral defence of the thesis in order to satisfy the requirements for graduation.

 

MPhil Stream

Study modes available

Full-time:  24 months 
Part-time:  36 months 

Students should fulfil the following requirements in order to obtain the Master's degree:

  • Attend 4 lecture courses (2 required research methodology courses and 2 elective courses)
  • Attend Thesis Research courses
  • Submit a research thesis and pass the oral defence

Other Requirement

Apart from the specific requirements of each programme, students are also required to complete an Improving Postgraduate Learning (IPL) module on "Observing Intellectual Property and Copyright Law during Research".

 

Postgraduate Studentship

Applicants being admitted as full-time research students (both MPhil and PhD stream) will be awarded the Postgraduate Studentship: HK$18,025 for PhD Pre-Candidacy students and HK$18,525 for PhD Post-Candidacy students in 2020-21. Students receiving the award are required to assist in the teaching and research work of the Department.
