3,000 Run for CUHK Marathon Team

This Sunday (17 January), nearly 3,000 CUHK Marathon Team runners will join the Standard Chartered Hong Kong Marathon. This sets a new record for the number of runners in CUHK’s team since it began participating in this annual sporting event! With this record number, CUHK Marathon Team becomes the second largest team in this year’s race and has won the ‘Most Supportive Group Award’ from the Standard Chartered Hong Kong Marathon. Prof. Fok Tai-fai, Pro-Vice-Chancellor attended the Prize Presentation Ceremony on 9 January, together with dozens of CUHK Marathon Team members.

On the race day, a support team of nearly 300 CUHK students, alumni, teachers and staff will cheer for runners along the marathon course and CUHK Sports Medicine Team will be stationed at the booth located at the finish point to provide medical services for runners.

To prep CUHK runners for the race, Mr. Daniel Lee, Lecturer of the Department of Sports Science and Physical Education has shared useful tips, and Mr. Chan Chi-ming, Lecturer of the Physical Education Unit has analyzed this year’s 10km route, each through a video. Record Breaking Glass Recycling for Shaw Anniversary

On 10 January, Shaw College celebrated its 30th anniversary in an innovative and environmental-friendly way. With overwhelming support from CUHK members and the public, a total of 1,147 kilograms of glass bottles were collected within an hour, officially setting a first Guinness World Record for recycling glass bottles in one hour!

Mr. Wong Kam-sing, JP, Secretary for the Environment of the HKSAR Government was invited to officiate at the event, and Prof. Joseph Sung, CUHK Vice-Chancellor also joined in the bid by bringing glass bottles of his own to give support. More than 550 participants were there to witness the record-breaking moment and a certificate from Guinness World Records was presented to mark the achievement. Later, the bottles collected will be reused as eco-material for constructing the alumni trail of Shaw College.

During the event, green organizations, social enterprises and student societies were invited to set up entertaining booths to promote messages of environmental protection and sustainability, corresponding with the theme of the event. Nine Colleges Compete for Rowing Championships

On 9 and 10 January, nearly 200 athletes from nine Colleges took part in the 12th CUHK Rowing Championships on the Shing Mun River, Shatin. Vice-Chancellor Prof. Joseph Sung, and the college masters also joined the event to cheer on the rowers.

Competition categories included Men's and Women's Single Scull, Double Scull, Coxed Four and Coxed Eight, Alumni Race and Invitation Race. Shing Mun River turned much noisier than usual with the cheers from the riverside. The Overall Champion and the Women's Overall Champion was Shaw College, while Lee Woo Sing College and Wu Yee Sun College bagged the Men's Overall Championship.
