The beautiful campus of CUHK is home to hundreds of Chinese medicinal herbs. These herbal gardens have become scenic spots on the campus and are also of great importance to research on herbs and our education in them.

The biggest herbal garden of the University is located opposite the Academic Building No.1. Opened in 2002, with a total floor area of 20,000 square feet and over 500 species of herbs, this herbal garden is also the largest one for teaching and research in Hong Kong. To introduce the plants to the public, bilingual tags were placed by them giving their names and describing their medicinal properties and their use in treatments. The garden not only serves academic research, its plants are also used as a good reference for herb identification. With a classic Chinese landscape design, the garden provides an enjoyable walk for passers-by.

Of the herbal gardens at four colleges, each has a signature plant: herbs from the ginger family at Chung Chi College; plants for herbal tea at New Asia College; medicinal flowers at United College; and fragrant herbs at Shaw College.

Now, let’s follow the camera and explore the herbal gardens around campus.

Three nursing rooms were opened recently at Chung Chi College, United College and S.H. Ho College to provide a private and hygienic environment for breast-feeding mothers. The fourth one at Pommerenke Student Centre will be opened in September.

The rooms were set up by the Task Force on Women and Family-Friendly Policies in CUHK, which aims to promote a working environment that is responsive to the needs of colleagues with family responsibilities. Co-convenors of the task force are Pro-Vice-Chancellors Prof. Fanny M.C. Cheung and Prof. Fok Tai-fai.

Besides setting up nursing rooms, a roundtable discussion was also held on the topic of women’s leadership. By holding gatherings from time to time, the task force aims to give constant support to female colleagues and help to enforce more Women and Family-Friendly Policies in the University.

The University has just released a new souvenir — CUHK Folding Screen Miniature. With its exquisite carving and beautiful paintings, this folding screen miniature is a precious collector's item.

The images on the folding screen are paintings by internationally acclaimed painter Mr. Wang Mingming, Vice Chairman of China Artists Association and Dean of Beijing Fine Art Academy. Mr. Wang was once an artist-in-residence at CUHK and the paintings, drawn during his stay on the campus, capture the tranquility and beauty of the University’s landscape. The two pieces of Chinese calligraphy are the University’s motto, '博文約禮' or 'Through learning and temperance to virtue'; and its mission ‘結合傳統與現代，融會中國與西方’ or ‘To combine tradition with modernity; to bring together China and the West’. The motto was written by world-renowned sinologist Professor the Honorable Jao Tsung-I GBM, who is Wei Lun Honorary Professor of Fine Arts at CUHK, and the mission statement by Professor Joseph J.Y. Sung, Vice-Chancellor and President of CUHK.

The folding screen is a significant piece of furniture in ancient China, and is used as an ornament as well as a partition. Nowadays, it has become an artwork medium with a variety of designs. Interested parties please feel free to visit the souvenir counter. Unit price is $890.
