CUHK Conferred Honorary Doctorates and Doctoral Degrees

CUHK held its 77th Congregation for the Conferment of Degrees on 4 December. Seven distinguished persons were conferred honorary doctorates in recognition of their outstanding contributions to their respective areas of academic and cultural progress, the promotion of community welfare, and the development of CUHK. They are: Ms. Chen Wai-wai Vivien, Dr. Joseph Koo, Prof. Lawrence Juen-yee Lau, Prof. Robert C. Merton, Mr. Mo Yan, Prof. Wang Shu and Prof. Zhou Ji. In addition, a total of 372 doctoral degrees were conferred at the Congregation.

Prof. Merton and Mr. Mo made speeches during the ceremony. Prof. Merton pointed out three main missions of a university: creation of knowledge, communication of knowledge and compilation of knowledge. He encouraged the University to take up the responsibility of supplying educated people in finance and undertaking research to improve the knowledge base necessary to keep pace with the needs of a well-functioning financial system. Mr. Mo spoke of his relationship with CUHK and how he immersed his writing in his life experience.

5,000 Alumni Came Home

The 2014 Alumni Homecoming Day of CUHK was held on 29 November, drawing close to 5,000 alumni, together with their families and friends to the campus. A range of interesting events including numerous game booths, health talks and various stage performances were available on the day. Moreover, visitors could also ride on an open-top bus to enjoy the picturesque campus.

To support the development of CUHK, a group of alumni has launched a fundraising campaign ‘One Day One Dollar’, and a sum of $1.5 million has been raised. The cheque presentation ceremony was held during the event.

Splendid Images of Chinese Paintings

Art Museum of CUHK has recently launched the ‘Splendid Images: Chinese Paintings from the Eryi Caotang Collection’ exhibition.

The exhibition features 70 masterpieces by well-known masters like Qi Baishi, Xu Beihong, Zhang Daqian, Lin Fengmian, Fu Baoshi, and Li Keran. All the paintings were loaned by Eryi Caotang, a renowned art collector, who has assembled an extraordinary collection that provides an overview of the development of Chinese painting from the late 19th century to the 20th century.

The exhibition is open to the public until 17 May, 2015. All are welcome to visit the exhibition and take a close look at the original works of the great masters.
