CUHK Mooncake has been introduced for the second year. All are welcome to join CUHK·Care Service Team to visit the elderly with CUHK Mooncake before the Mid-Autumn Festival. Last year, more than 1,000 pieces of CUHK Mooncake were sent to the elderly by more than 200 volunteers of the service team. This year, CUHK·Care Service Team will work again with charity organisations at Shatin and Taipo to organize a number of visits to the elderly. One of the largest visits will take place on 10 September. Details are as below. All members of CUHK are welcome to join.

Made by Caritas La Vie, a local social enterprise, CUHK Mooncake consists of low sugar white lotus seed paste with two yolks. It is not only a delicious festive delicacy but also signifies CUHK’s commitment to serving the community. For each box sold, a free mooncake will be delivered to the elderly in Shatin / Taipo. All profit gained from the mooncake sales will be donated to support the I‧CARE Programme of the University, which facilitates CUHK students’ initiatives in community services. It has never been an easy proposition for secondary school students to decide which discipline to pursue if they are to enter university in the near future. To inspire them and give them some direction on their future studies, CUHK has, in recent years, been organizing the Summer Institute, a two-week summer programme designed for S.5 students (or the equivalent). This year, about 300 secondary school students participated in the programme from 16 to 28 July to experience university life through a series of activities including master lectures, modules teaching, after-class activities and an orientation camp.

During the programme, classes were taught by teachers from different departments and covered a wide range of topics, such as arts, science, medicine, law, business administration and social science. The newly introduced Master Lecture Series invited renowned professors to give their views on their disciplines to the students. The speakers included Prof. Joseph Sung, Vice-Chancellor of CUHK; Prof. Joseph Yam, former Hong Kong Monetary Authority Chief Executive; Prof. Leo Lee, Sin Wai Kin Professor of Chinese Culture; Prof. Dickon Ng, Chairman from Department of Physics.

After-class activities like Sports Science Lab Workshop, Robotic Case Study, and introductions to various advanced research laboratories were intriguing and inspirational for the students. Orientation and graduation camps were organised, in which current CUHK students led the participants to experience university life through interactive games and serious discussion.

The exhibition ‘Dream Chaser: Early Paintings of Professor Wucius Wong’ is now open at the Art Museum of CUHK. Admission is free. Members of the public are welcome.

Prof. Wong is known for his lyrical landscapes, inspired by geometric forms and design principles. Little known about is his early aspiration to be a poet and his youthful yet talented experimentations with colours and drawings. For over half a century, Prof. Wong prudently safeguarded his early works, and rarely allowed public exposure. Recently, he decided to donate a significant portion of these highly personal works to CUHK.

This special exhibition presents Prof. Wong’s paintings from 1956 to 1962, a time when he was, in his own words, ‘searching for identity’. The exhibition shows diverse painting styles, such as cartoonish drawings, checkerboard-like landscapes, harbour scenes painted with palette knives and journalistic portraits of daily life, attesting to the vibrant mind of the young artist in his twenties. These poetic pictures anticipated Wong’s lifelong explorations in art.
