On October 17, 1963, The Chinese University of Hong Kong was founded. Today, the University takes pleasure in its 51st anniversary.
Five decades ago, CUHK started with three colleges, three faculties and 1,395 students. Now, it has nine colleges, eight faculties and close to 20,000 students. Over the years, the University has fostered over 150,000 graduates. Through the strenuous efforts of CUHK members, the barren hills were turned into a verdant campus. With a mission to combine tradition with modernity, and to bring together China and the West, the University has developed into a leading tertiary institution in the region.

Ms. Sylvia Chang, a famous actress, scriptwriter and director in Taiwan and Hong Kong, will visit CUHK on 31 October (Friday) to deliver the upcoming Shun Hing Lecture in Arts and Humanities co-organized by CUHK and Shun Hing Group. She will speak on the topic ‘Failure is the Nutrient of Success'.
Born in Taiwan, Ms. Chang has been involved in the film industry for more than 40 years, acting in over 100 movies. Her superb acting skills have been well-recognized through major film awards, including the Taipei Golden Horse Film Award for Best Leading Actress, and the Hong Kong Film Award for Best Actress. In addition, she has received numerous nominations and awards for her exceptionally creative contributions to film making, including Best Film and Best Screenplay at the Asia Pacific Film Festival.

Ann Hui, a famous film director in Hong Kong, visited the campus on 8 October and held a discussion titled ‘Conversing about Xiao Hong’, with Prof. Wong Nim Yan from CUHK and Prof. Xu Zidong from Lingnan University. In the discussion, the three speakers talked about Xiao Hong, a renowned writer in the Chinese modern literature world, and also a key figure in Ann Hui’s new movie The Golden Era.
Xiao Hong had a brief but dramatic life, during which she produced magnificent works including The Field of Life and Death, and Tales of Hulan River. She was born in an era of darkness and turbulence, but also a golden era for Chinese modern literature and new thoughts.
The speakers considered the life of Xiao Hong and her works from the angles of the movie, literature and history. They also shared their insights on the definition of ‘the Golden Era’ with over 800 audience members. Please feel free to watch the video of the talk via the attached link.
