Over 1,800 determined CUHK runners and a team of 300 wildly cheering supporters joined the Standard Chartered Hong Kong Marathon on Sunday, February 16. The slogan for the team was the one that worked so well for us last year; “Let’s run for CUHK!”. And just like last year, the team was given a head start by winning the “Most Supportive Group Award”.
Vice-chancellor Prof. Joseph Sung was there on the day, cheering our runners on site. He said he hoped that by taking part in this major, high profile sports event in Hong Kong, the University community’s sense of belonging to the city will become even stronger.
Pre-event training courses and on-site medical care service were also provided by members of the Department of Sports Science and Physical Education (SSPE), the Faculty of Education, the Department of Orthopaedics and Traumatology and the Faculty of Medicine.
One of the team members, Andie Ma, is a student of SSPE. She has been on the CUHK team for two years running. She was the champion in the half marathon last year. As a SSPE student, Andie says she has been really glad to be using her professional knowledge and personal experience to help out the first time runners.
Another team member, alumni T Y Hui, took part in the 10km race last year and challenged himself again by joining the half marathon this year. As a member of the CUHK team, he did his pre-training on campus. “I was surprised and happy to find myself reliving memories of old college days.” he said
Members of the CUHK Marathon Team excelled in the race. Daniel Lee Chi-wo, Assistant Lecturer in SSPE was the 1st runner-up of the 10km Challenge Men's Master 1 Division.
