The following programmes are open for application:
CUHK-University of Manchester Research Fund – Strategic Research Fund 2020
CUHK and The University of Manchester (UoM) established a joint CUHK-UoM Research Fund in 2015-16 to capitalise on the research strengths of both world-class universities and to create greater impact. Twelve projects have been supported thus far.
In recognition of the success achieved, the two universities have developed a Strategic Research Fund to support larger projects in areas of strategic fit for both institutions that will foster high level collaboration, particularly for future joint bids to large-scale external funding sources.
Up to two projects will be supported in this call with a maximum award of £45,000 per project. Projects must align with one of the following areas of mutual research strengths of CUHK and UoM: China Studies, Translational Biomedicine, and Environment and Sustainability.

McDonnell International Scholars Academy Scholarship Programme 2020-21
The Washington University in St. Louis (WUSTL), USA, is inviting applications to the McDonnell International Scholars Academy (McDonnell Academy) for admission in 2020–21.
The McDonnell Academy is a scholarship programme for graduates of its partner universities, including CUHK. It aims to attract talented international students for advanced educational experiences, and provides a means for the University to learn more about the global community. Application for the 2020–21 academic year is now open till Monday, 13 January 2020 (internal deadline).
Application to the McDonnell Academy should be submitted online. Applicants should forward a copy of their applications to the Office of Academic Links (c/o Ms. Alice Leong; hyleong@cuhk.edu.hk) by Monday, 13 January 2020 for necessary follow-up. Upon confirmation, applicants should submit their applications online before Friday, 31 January 2020.

The 50th St. Gallen Symposium – Global Essay Competition
The 50th St. Gallen Symposium hosted by the University of St. Gallen, Switzerland is now calling for entries for its Global Essay Competition. Students are cordially invited to take part in the essay competition to discuss the question ‘Freedom Revisited: Which aspects of freedom need to be defended, or recalibrated, to meet the challenges of our time?’
The authors of the top 100 essays will be qualified as Leaders of Tomorrow and receive the St. Gallen Wings of Excellence Award for an expense waiver to participate in the Symposium. A prize money of CHF 20,000 will be shared among the authors of the top three essays.
The annual St. Gallen Symposium is the world’s leading initiative for intergenerational debates on economics, political and social developments. It will be held during 7–8 May 2020 at the University of St. Gallen where participants can meet 300 of the world’s brightest young minds and join the debate with 600 senior leaders and decision makers worldwide.
Applicants must fulfill the following criteria:
- Enrolled in a graduate or postgraduate programme (master level or higher) in any field of study
- Born in or after 1990

Eurasia-Pacific Uninet Ernst Mach Grant for PhD Students and Post-Docs for 2020-21
The Eurasia-Pacific Uninet (EPU) is inviting applications from PhD students and Post-Docs of CUHK for a research scholarship programme for 2020-21. The programme provides support to PhD students and Post-Docs undertaking short-term research attachments at one of the EPU member institutions in Austria. Application will close on Sunday, 15 March 2020.
TERMS OF AWARD
- Duration of visit:
- 1-9 months for PhD students
- 1-6 months for Post-Docs
- Value of award:
- €1,050 per month for PhD students
- €1,150 per month for Post-Docs
- The award is meant to cover accident and health insurance, accommodation, visa, daily-life and travel expenditures. Recipients may receive an additional travel subsidy of up to €1,000.
- Recipients are exempted from tuition fees.
- The Austrian Agency for International Cooperation in Education and Research will provide logistic support on health insurance as well as accommodation.
