The Memorial Service of Professor SO Hing Bun

In memory of Professor SO Hing Bun, who passed away peacefully on 9 September 2016.

To pay tribute to Prof. SO, New Asia College, CUHK, New Asia Institute of Advanced Chinese Studies and the Department of History are co-organising a memorial service, to be held on Saturday 26 November 2016 at 10:30am in Yun Chi Hsien, New Asia College, The Chinese University of Hong Kong.

Flowers are gratefully declined.

Acting Appointment

Prof. LAI Ming Chiu, Department Chairman, will be on academic leave from 27 to 31 October and on annual leave from 1 to 2 November 2016. During his absence, Prof. CHEUNG Sui Wai will serve as the Acting Chairman.

 


Academic Activities

Recapping the academic seminar “全球史、區域史與歷史人類學” conducted by Prof. David FAURE on 14 October 2016

Drawing on papers from his book on society and rituals in Ming-Qing China as the thread, Prof. FAURE reviewed his academic interests in social history studies on Ming-Qing China and the starting points of picking up different research topics over the years. He pointed out that secret society, lineage or ethnic minority, are all constructed works but have real impact on local society. The construction concepts are always expressed through rituals. So much so that, he believed that rituals are the key to unlocking the uniqueness and complexity of the society of Ming-Qing China.

 


Recapping the “Conference in Commemoration of Professor YEN Keng-wang’s Centenary” held on 14–15 October 2016

The Centre for Chinese History of the Department of History, CUHK, New Asia College, CUHK; the New Asia Institute of Advanced Chinese Studies and the New Asia Institute of Advanced Chinese Studies Alumni Educational and Cultural Association Limited co-organised the “Conference in Commemoration of Professor YEN Keng-wang’s Centenary” on 14–15 October 2016. Prof. Henry WONG, Head of New Asia College, CUHK, and Prof. LAU Chor Wah, Director of New Asia Institute of Advanced Chinese Studies officiated at the opening ceremony and delivered the opening speeches.

Nearly 40 scholars from Taiwan, Mainland China and Hong Kong were invited to present papers or act as moderators at the conference. Prof. LEE Hok Ming of the New Asia Institute of Advanced Chinese Studies, Prof. LIU Pak Yuen of Academia Sinica and Prof. ZHU Lei of Wuhan University delivered keynote speeches. A sharing session was arranged towards the end of the conference for participants to share their experiences and fond memories of Professor YEN Keng-wang. All participants greatly enjoyed the session and the conference.

 


Recapping the “Public Lecture on Conservation of Hong Kong Heritage: You Only Live Twice” delivered by Mr. TAM Hon Wah Billy and Mr. CHOW Tak Nin Thomas on 15 October 2016

Mr. Billy TAM and Mr. Thomas CHOW, registered architects, were invited by the MA Programme in Comparative and Public History and the Alumni Association of MA in Comparative and Public History to give a public lecture. They shared with the audience how they involved themselves in different aspects of the Heritage Conservation and Revitalisation Projects of Former Police Married Quarters on Hollywood Road and Old Tai Po Police Station.
