Recapping the Academic Seminar “GIS (地理信息系統) 技術及歷史研究中的應用” conducted by Prof. LAM Weng Cheong on 18 October 2019

The seminar began with an introduction of the facilities and software available at the Digital Scholarship Lab by Ms. Kitty SIU, Digital Scholarship Librarian of the CUHK Library. Prof. LAM Weng Cheong then introduced three Geographic Information System (GIS) software, namely ArcGIS, GRASS GIS and QGIS. He addressed the importance of applying GIS in historical research, which made research findings more visible and presentable. In addition, the combination of text, digit and maps helped to develop related or independent research in both literature and map systems at the same time. It facilitated the consolidation of historical materials and exploration of patterns and connections among materials. Prof. LAM further introduced some core methods of GIS, explained how to use raster maps, databases and georeferencing in research, and showed some databases with Corona satellite image and Harvard Chinese History GIS information to enhance students’ understanding of the subject.
