HKPFS - Eligible PhD Programmes

The programme is research-oriented. A student may be asked to take additional courses or tutorials, and will be required to present an annual written progress report to his/her supervisor. After passing the Qualifying Examination and submitting a Research Proposal for a project requiring nine to twelve months of fieldwork, the student advances to PhD Candidature. On return from the fieldwork, the student will prepare a thesis based on the fieldwork research.

Fields of Specialization

The Division focuses geographically on Chinese culture and society (especially South China) and on East and Southeast Asian Studies. Research topics include globalization, gender, heritage, archaeology, tourism, migration, cultures of expertise, cultural psychology, and cultural diversity.

In addition to the general requirements of the Graduate School, applicants should possess a master's degree in anthropology from CUHK or other recognized universities. Applicants with a background in fields other than anthropology may be considered for conditional admission.

Applicants are required to furnish proof of their research capability by submitting samples of writings or publications such as thesis or project reports, and a statement of purpose (2-3 pages) describing why the applicant wants to study anthropology at CUHK and what research project the applicant proposes to carry out. If relevant for research, some evidence of Chinese proficiency is also required for non-native speakers.

The PhD student is required to complete a minimum of 27 units of courses, including:

• Two required courses (a total of 6 units).
• Three elective seminars or courses offered by related programmes and departments (a total of 9 units).
• A Thesis Guidance course every term from the beginning of the second year of study (for students admitted with a research master's degree) or the third year of study (for students admitted without a research master's degree) until the doctoral thesis is finally submitted (a total of 12 units). 

Students must pass the qualifying examination. 

Students are required to complete a PhD thesis, which should make substantial contribution to scholarship in the chosen field of specialization, and to pass an oral defense of the thesis. English should be used in both the thesis and the oral defense. 

At the completion of their programme students will be required to demonstrate ability to read Chinese articles in academic journals in the appropriate field of specialization.

Fields of Specialization

The PhD in Chinese Studies programme in the Centre for China Studies is devoted to advanced research training in the interdisciplinary study of Chinese history, economy, politics and business, literature, film, religion, culture and society.

1. a detailed research proposal with areas of research interest indicated, about 10 pages in length and written in English.
2. a copy of Master's thesis or sample research paper written in English.
3. applicants should have a good result in Chinese language paper in Hong Kong Advanced Level Examination (AS Level), Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education (HKDSE) Examination, GCSE, A-level GCE, SAT 1, SAT AP, HSK, STAMP or equivalent examinations. Alternatively, applicants can submit a sample paper of at least 5 pages in length written in Chinese to demonstrate proficiency in Chinese to work on Chinese materials as needed for the thesis research. Applicants who have taken a degree programme of which the medium of instruction was Chinese do not need to provide the aforementioned public examination results or sample paper.

The programme is research-oriented. All doctoral students have to attend seminars within the normative study years and take four to six courses.

If the Division deems it necessary, some students may be required to take a course on a language other than English and Chinese and meet any further requirements laid down by the Division.

Students are required to fulfil the qualifying examination requirement before they can submit their dissertations.

The student will write his/her dissertation under the guidance of his/her supervisor.

Applicants should submit the following documents in both soft copy and hard copy. The soft copy should be saved in PDF and sent to the Division by email.

1. A copy of Master’s thesis.
2. A research proposal* (strictly limited to 8,000 words, including the topic, scope, structure and methodology of the research) and a bibliography on a separate sheet.
3. A sample of academic writing (published or unpublished) in a related field.
4. A personal statement in Chinese (not more than 1,000 words).

*Applicants should also submit the research proposal in DOC format and write down the total word count of the main text at the end of the proposal. According to the regulation of the Division, research proposals exceeding the word limit will not be accepted.

PhD Stream

Students are required to complete a minimum of 60 units for graduation, including a minimum of 12 units of lecture courses and 48 units of thesis research courses.
Students are required to take the thesis research course every term till they graduate.

Applicants who do not hold a Master’s degree awarded by this University or a recognized university are required to have completed the first-year course of study of the Master’s programme before they are considered for admission. Candidacy examination

PhD students (pre-candidacy) should complete all required lecture courses or equivalent and pass a candidacy examination before they can be advanced to PhD candidate. Details of the candidacy examination are as follows:

Areas of Examination

Paper 1: Connoisseurship and analysis of original works of art
Paper 2: Written examination on specific issues of Chinese Art

Attempts

Students must pass both papers at the same time. They are allowed to take the examinations only one more time if they fail their first attempt.

Thesis proposal and defence

PhD students (pre-candidacy) are required to submit a written thesis proposal, and present and defend the proposal orally.

Third Language Requirement

Students are required to have the ability to read research materials in a third modern language other than Chinese and English. To demonstrate their proficiency for this purpose, they must pass a relevant language test set by the Division.

Fields of specialization include the histories and theories of Chinese painting and calligraphy, ceramics, bronzes, jades and other arts.

The objective of the programme is to encourage the advancement of research in Japanese studies by offering graduate training that accommodates a range of academic concerns in the field. The programme will focus on historical and socio-cultural aspects of Japan-China and Japan-Hong Kong relations from such disciplines as anthropology, history, popular culture, linguistic and international relations.
This programme is mainly for candidates who seek to study for a PhD degree as their ultimate goal.

MPhil Stream

Historical Musicology

• Applicants should have majored in musicology or another related field.
• Ability to use a language other than Chinese and English, for research purposes, is required for all Historical Musicology students.

Theory

• Ability to use a language other than Chinese and English, for research purposes, is required for all Theory students.

Third Language Requirement

Students are required to complete a minimum of 9 units of courses on a language other than Chinese and English. Subject to the approval of the Division, credits gained for appropriate language courses at other institutions may be recognized.

Coursework

In addition to the 9 units of third language courses, students are required to take courses in three years. In the first two years of their study, students shall complete at least 11 units of graduate courses, which include “Research Methodology Seminar I & II”, “Guided Study” and “Special Seminar on Selected Philosophical Issues” (twice).

Students not already possessing a degree in philosophy may be required to take additional units if deemed necessary. Students shall meet their supervisors regularly for academic discussion and progress report.

Thesis

Students are required to take 6 units of thesis writing courses in the third year of their study and complete a PhD thesis with substantial contribution to scholarship.

The Programme is research-oriented and aims at training students in critical thinking to conduct independent research in translation studies. Thesis supervisors are assigned in accordance with individual students' research topics.

Students are required to complete “Research Seminar in Translation I”, “Research Seminar in Translation II” and “Thesis Supervision”. They will meet regularly with their supervisor(s) for discussions on their research topic. They must pass a qualifying examination, complete a dissertation and go through an oral examination. The Division may also require students to take additional courses if necessary.

Students must pass the qualifying examination within the maximum period stipulated below (calculated from the date of admission) before they can be promoted to PhD candidature.

After passing the qualifying examination, candidates will proceed to complete their theses.

• Each MPhil student is required to give an oral presentation on his/her research progress.

PhD Stream

Pre-candidacy

• Complete all the graduate courses required by the Department.
• When deemed necessary by advisor/supervisor, students may be required to take other courses.
• Each PhD student is required to pass a written candidacy examination within the maximum period of his/her candidacy stage for the advancement to his/her post-candidacy stage.
• Submit thesis proposal and defence.

Post-candidacy

• Each PhD student is required to submit a thesis and pass the oral defence of the thesis for graduation.

Fields of Specialization

The School of Accountancy is committed to both theoretical and applied accounting research. Faculty members in the School have varied teaching and research interests that encompass the following areas:

1. Financial Accounting and Reporting

Specific research topics include the application of quantitative methods in accounting, financial accounting regulations and choice, roles of accounting information in capital markets, valuation analysis, financial statement analysis, financial reporting and disclosures issues, and professional ethics.

2. Management Accounting and Information Systems

Major topics include management accounting systems design, risk analysis in capital budgeting, modelling and statistical research in management accounting, accounting and control systems, national culture and management accounting issues, behavioral accounting, agency theory, information systems for competitive advantages, and accounting information systems.

3. Auditing

Specific research topics include modelling and statistical research in auditing, behavioral issues in auditing, human information processing in auditing, auditor's responsibilities and liabilities, and economic-based approaches to auditing research.

4. International Accounting and Accounting in China

Although all research in these areas is undertaken within the Faculty, current research is moving towards the behavioral, organizational and cultural dimensions of accounting studies utilizing capital market, agency, contingency and other contemporary theories. In line with the research ethos of the Faculty, the research thrust in the School has an interdisciplinary flavor, and draws heavily on the disciplines of statistical decision theory, psychology, economics, sociology and law.

The hospitality business is a leading growth industry in Hong Kong, which is home to several major worldwide hotel chains. As a significant number of leading property companies in Hong Kong also have business ties with the hotel industry, research activities in the areas of hospitality, tourism, real estate and finance span a wide spectrum of topics. Hospitality-related research conducted by the School of Hotel and Tourism Management falls into four main areas:

1. Real Estate and Finance
Major issues examined include the development of property valuation theories, property acquisition and financing methods, the best use of property and the development of secondary property equity and debt markets. Specific research topics concentrate on price behavior and agency issues in Real Estate Investment Trusts, asset pricing theories, the market efficiency of the property markets and strategic development by developers. Future research will look at the unique features of the Hong Kong property market, the short-term stochastic movement of hotel-related revenue and other issues related to hospitality and property.

2. Marketing and Tourism
The hospitality and travel industries are part of the growing service sector. The growth of service industries has created a demand for research into marketing approaches that increase service effectiveness given the unique characteristics of intangibility, inseparability, perishability and variability intrinsic to these industries. In research terms, the presence of a service provider also moderates practically all marketing theories on buyer-seller interaction. At the macro level, research topics include destination marketing, franchising, management contract and brand equity. Theory development emphasizes issues that are especially relevant to Hong Kong and mainland China, such as the negotiation and cross-cultural aspects of hospitality marketing.

Courses offered by the Department of Decision Sciences and Managerial Economics concentrate on four areas: Business Economics, Management Information Systems, Operations Management and Quantitative Methods. In addition, cross-disciplinary research efforts are also carried out in many areas. The research activities of the faculty members can be broadly categorized into the following three areas:

1. Business/Managerial Economic Studies

The main objective of this field is to help students develop skills in conducting rigorous economic research on topics that are related to management theories and business decisions. Current faculty expertise covers a wide variety of fields, including studies of the Chinese economy, applied microeconomics, behavioral economics, experimental economics, empirical research methods with applications to financial markets, labor markets and industrial organization. Examples of current faculty research include psychological influences on economic decision-making through experimental and empirical methods, educational policy in China, the economics of airports, social networks and job search in local markets, and air pollution and decision-making.

2. Management Information Systems

The Management Information Systems faculty at the CUHK Business School has a distinguished record of research accomplishments and external visibility. The Management Information systems faculty’s research interests cover a wide range of application areas including business analytics, digital finance, online advertising, digital innovations, online platforms & markets, AI & machine learning, and experimental economics, among others.

3. Operations Management

This area’s research focuses are the theoretical development and practical applications in the fields of operations management and operations research. Particular topics of interests include inventory management, supply chain management, revenue management and pricing, service operations management, operations-finance interface, operations-marketing interface, and operations-accounting interface. The Department of Finance pursues three research specializations:

1. Corporate Finance
The corporate finance research concentrates on company financing and investment activities and corporate governance. Specific research topics include capital structure decision, mergers and acquisitions, minority shareholder protection and corporate governance issues in China.

2. Investment
The main investment vehicles examined include stocks, bonds, gold, mortgages and derivatives. Specific research topics concentrate on the study of price behavior, asset pricing, market efficiency and implications for portfolio selection and investment strategies.

3. Financial Markets and Institutions
The research area covers the instruments traded in the financial markets, the analysis of money and capital markets, and economic and environmental problems related to acquisitions and the use of funds by financial institutions. The PhD programme in Education is research-oriented. A student normally combines seminars with guided independent research in an individually designed course of study under the guidance of the supervisor and the thesis committee.

Advancement to PhD candidature is conditional upon completion of coursework requirements and passing of a qualifying examination. Within twelve months after advancement to PhD candidature, the candidate must submit a thesis proposal to the Graduate Panel. After the thesis proposal is approved, the candidate should submit a thesis and pass the oral defence within a prescribed period of time for graduation.

This articulated MPhil/PhD programme in Biomedical Engineering is offered by the Faculty of Engineering as an inter-disciplinary programme in close collaboration with the Faculty of Medicine. It builds on the strengths of the two Faculties in biomedical sciences and engineering with the aim to educate future leaders who can master the fundamental knowledge base and innovate technology to address various health and clinical challenges in our time and beyond.

MPhil Stream

An MPhil student is required to complete a number of graduate courses offered by the Division, or by other Divisions of the Faculties of Engineering, Medicine and Science, subject to the approval of the supervisor and Division Head. The student must submit a satisfactory thesis and successfully defend it. Students with good academic performance in their first year of study may be permitted to transfer to the PhD Stream.

PhD Stream

All students in the PhD Stream are admitted initially to the pre-candidacy status. After completing a required number of graduate courses, passing a candidacy examination, and having successfully defended the thesis proposal, the student will be allowed to progress to the post-candidacy status. Our articulated MPhil-PhD programme provides students with an opportunity of being involved in in-depth studies and focused research in selected areas of electronic engineering. The programme is intended to foster high-quality and forward-looking research activities, so as to meet the society’s demand for high-caliber engineers who are knowledgeable in the latest technologies.

Starting from 2013, there will be a screening test for both the MPhil and PhD students 9 months after admission. The purpose of the test is to find out if the student has the aptitude to carry out research at a postgraduate level in their chosen specialization. Failure of the test may result in the termination of the postgraduate studentship.

MPhil Stream

An MPhil student is required to complete 4 graduate-level courses.

In addition, the student is required to carry out a research project of about 18 months in a duration from which a satisfactory thesis is to be submitted. The student must also attend an oral examination to present his/her work to an appointed thesis committee. Students with good academic performance in their first year of study may be permitted to transfer to the PhD Stream.

PhD Stream

The PhD stream provides in-depth training for students who are interested in basic or applied research. All students in the PhD stream will be admitted initially in the pre-candidacy status. Upon satisfying the Division’s candidacy requirements, a student will be allowed to progress to the post-candidacy status.

The candidacy examination is a written examination to ensure that the student has a sufficient set of knowledge in Electronic Engineering. The major graduation requirement for a PhD student (post-candidacy) is a doctoral thesis that contains a substantial amount of original research work in the selected areas.

MPhil Stream

Each MPhil student is required to complete at least 4 graduate courses with a total of 12 units, and must register for the relevant thesis research course in every term throughout his/her study period. 

Each MPhil student is required to submit a thesis and pass the oral defence of the thesis for graduation. 

PhD Stream Pre-candidacy

Each PhD student is required to complete at least 4 graduate courses with a total of 12 units during the pre-candidacy stage, including at least 1 faculty core course, and must register for the relevant Thesis Research Course in every term throughout his/her study period.

Each PhD student is required to pass a written candidacy examination for the advancement to his/her post-candidacy stage. The purpose of this examination is to test the student's basic knowledge and understanding in the SEEM discipline. 

Each PhD student is required to submit a written thesis proposal and pass the oral defence of the proposal within the maximum period of his/her pre-candidacy stage.

PhD Stream Post-candidacy

Each student is required to complete the remaining graduate courses  (in total 7 courses for the whole PhD study period), and must register for a thesis research course every term throughout his/her study period.

The PhD in Laws is the most advanced degree awarded by the Faculty of Law. The PhD Programme is a research programme generally open only to those students committed to a career in legal research and teaching and able to write a thesis of publishable quality making an original contribution to knowledge.

In addition to the general requirements of the Graduate School, applicants must:

• possess a Juris Doctor (JD) degree or a Master of Laws (LLM) degree awarded by a recognized university with a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or above; or
• possess an equivalent degree (including non-law related) awarded by a recognized tertiary educational institution.

Applicants must satisfy the English Language Proficiency Requirement by:

• possessing a Bachelor’s degree awarded by a recognized university in Hong Kong or an English-speaking country, or taught primarily in the English Language; or
• achieving a result of Band 7.0 or better in the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) . IELTS test results must be obtained not more than two years prior to the date of applying for admission to the PhD Programme; or

MPhil Stream

The normative study period is 2 years for full-time students and 3 years for part-time students. Besides course requirements, an MPhil student is also required to submit a thesis on empirical research work. The student must also attend an oral examination to present his/her work to the thesis committee.

PhD Stream

The normative study period is 4 years for full-time students (or 3 years for those with an approved Research Master’s Degree) and 64 months for part-time students (or 48 months for those with an approved Research Master's Degree). All students will be admitted to the pre-candidacy stage. Besides course requirements, they have to pass the candidacy requirements to progress to the post-candidacy stage. The candidacy requirements include passing a written examination and preparing a thesis proposal. In order to obtain the PhD degree, a student (post-candidacy) must submit a doctoral thesis on original research work, and also attend an oral examination to present his/her research to the thesis committee.

The MPhil-PhD programme supports interdisciplinary studies in the field of public health and primary care and aims to build the capacity of students in research methodologies as they relate to public and population health, and community oriented primary care. The fields of study are related to health protection, health improvement and as well as research methodologies and health service provision. Students will need to learn by conducting independent research and by participating in the work of the 8 divisions of the CUHK JC School of Public Health and Primary Care. MPhil and PhD programmes are articulated, which means that students can, with Division approval, transfer from the MPhil to the first (pre-candidacy) part of the PhD, and vice-versa.

The programme is research-oriented. Students are required to take required courses in the first year. For students who possess research Master's degree, the minimum number of units is 21 units, including 18 units of required courses, and 3 units of elective course. For students who do not possess research Master degrees, the minimum number of units is 27 units, including 18 units of required courses, and 9 units of elective courses. This is a research-type programme leading to the degree of MPhil or PhD in Government and Public Administration. Students admitted to the MPhil stream and the PhD stream will take the same courses, but with higher requirements for PhD students. MPhil students with outstanding results may apply for transferral to the PhD stream, whereas PhD students performing unsatisfactorily will be transferred to the MPhil stream. The programme thus provides flexibility for conversion between the two stream. The department will give priority to PhD applications. Applicants without a master’s degree can apply for the PhD stream directly.

In addition to the  general requirements of the Graduate School, 

all applicants for the MPhil and PhD Streams are required to submit a two- or three-page statement of purpose to elaborate on their research interests and identify potential supervisors.

applicants for the PhD Stream are also required to submit a writing sample such as a master thesis or a research paper, and a research proposal (3-5 pages).

MPhil Stream

This programme is the first postgraduate programme in Hong Kong designed specifically for the training of professional industrial organizational psychologists. Students will receive comprehensive training in utilizing psychological knowledge for improving organizational effectiveness and employee satisfaction. Students are required to complete a minimum of 31 units of courses (excluding thesis research courses). 

PhD Stream

The objective of this programme is to train students to make independent contributions to the advancement of psychological knowledge. Students are required to complete a minimum of 42 units of courses (excluding thesis research courses), pass a candidacy examination, and submit a research thesis and pass an oral examination for graduation.

Fields of Specialization

Application of psychological research to the workplace to improve the well-being and performance of the people and the organization. Topics include talent management, engagement and motivation, learning and development, psychological assessment, leadership, group dynamics, and learning organization.

1. possess a Bachelor's degree in Psychology or equivalent; and
2. have obtained an overall GPA of 3.0 or above.

All MPhil applicants should also submit a statement of career aspiration and research interest (750 words in English).

For the PhD Stream

1. possess a Bachelor's degree in Psychology or equivalent;
2. have obtained an overall GPA of 3.5 or above or honours not lower than Second Class Upper; and
3. have completed an individually supervised research thesis.

All PhD applicants should also submit:

• a research proposal in English (2500 words or above); and
• a statement of career aspiration and research interest (750 words in English).

All supporting documents including confidential recommendations should reach our Division on or before the application deadline.

The objective of this programme is to provide advanced academic and research training in a field of specialization in psychology. Students, under close supervision by a faculty member, are required to write a thesis that will contribute to psychological knowledge, and complete a minimum of 17 units of courses (excluding thesis research courses).

PhD Stream

The objective of this programme is to train students to make independent contributions to the advancement of psychological knowledge. Students are required to complete a minimum of 17 units of courses (excluding thesis research courses), pass a candidacy examination, and submit a research thesis and pass an oral examination for graduation.

This programme, offered in the full-time mode, will provide advanced research and clinical training to master-level clinical psychologists to raise their standards of professional practice and academic/research competence. The aim of the programme is to train future leaders in the clinical psychology profession, preparing graduates of this programme for senior posts in either tertiary educational institutions or practice settings.

2. have eligibility for membership of the Division of Clinical Psychology, Hong Kong Psychological Society.

Knowledge of spoken Cantonese and written Chinese is required (Courses are taught in Cantonese and English).

All applicants should also submit a thesis proposal in English (2,500 words or above).

MPhil Stream

For full-time MPhil students, the period of study is 24 months beginning in August. For part-time MPhil students, the period of study is 36 months beginning in August.

PhD Stream

For full-time PhD students, the period of study is 36 months for those with a research Master's degree and 48 months for those without a research Master's degree or only with a Bachelor's degree. For part-time PhD students, the period of study is 48 months for those with a research Master's degree and 64 months for those without a research Master's degree or only with a Bachelor's degree.

Children and youth development, elderly service, family therapy, mental health, poverty, social capital, social exclusion, social policy, social security, social welfare development in China, social work education, social work intervention methods and youth delinquency.

MPhil Stream*

Students are required to complete a minimum of 12 units of required courses and to take a Thesis Research course each term until end of studies.

PhD Stream*

Students are required to complete a minimum of 18 units of required courses and to take a Thesis Research course each term until end of studies. In addition, students are also required to pass 2 candidacy examinations within a specific period.

In addition to the general requirements of the Graduate School, preference will be given to applicants who have a solid background in one social science subject (Sociology, Anthropology or Psychology, etc.) and whose research interests are well developed.

Applicants are required to submit a research proposal. Those interested in admission to PhD Stream are required to furnish proof of their research capability in the form of strong recommendations from their academic referees, or past publications, etc.
