Master of Sociology Versus Master of Social Work in Hong Kong

In the Chinese University of Hong Kong, both Master of Sociology and Maser of Social Work programmes can be found. Many people not in the field of social sciences are unable to distinguish between sociology and social work. Actually, those who have studied sociology in the university are not necessary to be a social work in Hong Kong, while Master of Social Work is mainly designed for those who are going to pursue a career in social work or become a registered social worker in Hong Kong.

In CUHK and Hong Kong, Master of Sociology has more than one subfields, due to the fact that most sociologists work in one or more subfields. Cluster of sub-fields may be able to examine different dimensions of society. For example, to study the inequality and class structure, we have social stratification. To study the changes in a population size or type in a city or in a country, we have demography. To examine the criminal behaviour and deviance, we have criminology. These are all important areas in sociology, as they are all based on the systematic study of society and social action performed by individuals and society.

The Master of Social Science in Social Work programme in CUHK is a professional training programme for students with a bachelor degree not majoring in social work, including sociology. The master programme is regarded as the professional qualification in social work in Hong Kong.
