Mrs. LAU Sophie
During her first year of University studies, Mrs. Sophie Lau was a part-time social worker for an NGO. She benefitted through interacting with the under-privileged class. Being able to help the needy is a blessing. Her work experience in law offices in the States was very challenging. She gained by learning how to adjust to a new culture, a different way of living, and how to work for demanding lawyers in a most competitive environment. Her later years of employment was in a public listed company in Hong Kong. It offered her another perspective of work life through interacting with English, Chinese and Japanese bosses and employees. Her equally rewarding years of employment were those in CUHK. She had been Director of Personnel for 22 years. She led a team of 80 staff. Together they performed the full range of personnel functions for 6000+ university employees including academic, non-teaching and minor staff. Having been Head Prefect in her high school has certainly prepared her well for the above challenges.
She had been mentor to students under the Leadership Development Program. She fully enjoyed talking to young people and offered them assistance and advice whenever possible. She hopes to contribute equally to the College Mentoring Scheme too.
