THESIS TOPIC

Between Heteronomy and Autonomy: The Inherent Tension among WTO Safety Valves, co-supervised by Professors Bryan MERCURIO and Chin Leng LIM.

RESEARCH INTERESTS AND AIMS

I am interested in international economic law, international trade law, especially international trade remedies. With my thesis, I hope to reveal the economic/political reasons as well as philosophical rationale behind the phenomenon that Members of the WTO increasingly resort to “safety valves” measures against alleged injury caused by their counterparties. In addition, variations of “safety valves” measures and the MPIA, as a new expression of Members’ autonomy/autointerpretation in terms of choice of dispute resolution mechanism, will be investigated and bring new thoughts to the literature.
