Prof. Calvin CK Chan from the Department of Information Engineering has been elected a Fellow of the Optical Society (OSA) in the class of 2021. This year, this distinction was awarded to 118 OSA members, from 24 countries/regions, who have contributed to the advancement of optics and photonics through education, research, engineering, business leadership and service. Professor Chan was elected for his outstanding contributions to “the enabling technologies for wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) passive optical networks, optical performance monitoring and signal processing in optical fibre transmission”. He is the only elected Fellow from Hong Kong this year. Professor Calvin CK Chan is a Hong Kong native. He received his B.Eng., M.Phil., and Ph.D. degrees in information engineering from CUHK. Before joining CUHK in 2001, he worked at the Lucent Bell Labs Research on Photonics Networks in the USA. He is currently a Professor and the Chairman of the Department of Information Engineering at CUHK. Professor Chan’s research interests include enabling technologies for optical fibre systems and networks, ranging through optical broadband access, high-speed fibre transmission and metropolitan-area optical networking. He has devoted his efforts in designing novel and practical schemes to enhance the networking functionalities of the optical physical layer, including self-healing network architectures, wavelength add-drops and multicasts, advanced signal modulations, high-speed optical and digital processing techniques, and optical performance monitoring. Professor Chan has co-authored over 400 refereed journal and conference papers. Professor Chan stated, “I am very grateful to CUHK, the Faculty of Engineering and the Department of Information Engineering for their unfailing support in providing an ideal research environment, and the state-of-the-art test and measuring equipment to support the high-speed optical systems research over the past years.
