HIST2001A Historiography (Introductory)

Course Description

This course aims at introducing the basic concepts of history and the historian and developing students’ fundamental skills of conducting historical research and writing. These skills include using reference tools, locating and studying various historical documents, formulating research questions, identifying different categories of historical materials and their features, criticizing, analyzing and organizing historical data, mastering the principles of historical writing and its various styles and academic formats, grasping techniques of oral presentation and discussion, etc. Visits to libraries(Online visit arranged by librarians due to pandemic), museums, archives or field trips may also be arranged.

Learning Outcomes

After completing this course, students will be able to: 
1. understand the basic concepts of history and the role of the historian; 
2. master the empirical methods and skills for historical research; 
3. understand and follow the principles of historical writing and recognize various styles and formats of academic writing; 
4. grasp the skills of oral presentation, questioning and discussion, etc.; 
5. master the techniques to collect historical materials and explore historical monuments for academic research; 
6. develop critical, analytical and creative thinking on diversified themes of historical study.

Grade A 

Outstanding performance on all learning outcomes. 

Grade A-

Generally outstanding performance on all (or almost all) learning outcomes.

Substantial performance on all learning outcomes, OR high performance on some learning outcomes which compensates for less satisfactory performance on others, resulting in overall substantial performance.

Grade C

Satisfactory performance on the majority of learning outcomes, possibly with a few weaknesses.

2 Visits & 12 Tutorials

1) Online University Library Tour(探尋文獻史料──網上參觀中大圖書館) on Zoom on 7 October (Wed) 10:30am-12:15pm.

Include: 1. Workshop on Finding Information and Primary Sources for Historiography(歷史資料檢用工作坊) and 2. Introduction to Special Collections(圖書館特藏善本文獻簡介).

2) Visit to Exhibition of Hong Kong Museum of History(探尋文物史料──參觀香港歷史博物館展覽) on 24 October (Sat).

(To be confirmed. The visit may be postponed to 31 October (Sat) or a Saturday morning in November due to the decoration work of the Museum. Teacher would provide historical sources including relics pictures to students for completing museum worksheet if the museum visit is canceled due to the pandemic.)

Visit Time: Group A: 10:30am-12:00pm; Group B: 11:00am-12:30pm

Assemble Point & Time: Museum Main Lobby(博物館地下大堂), Group A: 10:15am; Group B: 10:45am.

Assignments without the properly signed declaration will not be graded by teachers.

Only the final version of the assignment should be submitted via VeriGuide.

The submission of a piece of work, or a part of a piece of work, for more than one purpose (e.g. to satisfy the requirements in two different courses) without declaration to this effect shall be regarded as having committed undeclared multiple submissions. It is common and acceptable to reuse a turn of phrase or a sentence or two from one’s own work; but wholesale reuse is problematic. In any case, agreement from the course teacher(s) concerned should be obtained prior to the submission of the piece of work.
