As part of the commemoration of the 55th Anniversary of the Department, we are presently launching a fundraising program for the establishment of a new departmental fund named “Chemistry Alumni Fund” which is dedicated to a full-scale comprehensive support of our undergraduate students. The timing is so set as to permit us to take advantage of the government’s upcoming implementation of its Eighth Matching Grant Scheme for 2018-19, on a first-come-first-served basis, to assist local universities with their fundraising endeavors. We appeal to you at this juncture to make donations to the afore-mentioned Fund so that the amount accumulated over a period of time can be used for matching purpose in our application to the next round of Matching Grant Scheme.
In the past 55 years, the Department has come a long way from its humble beginning as an obscure teaching unit equipped with only makeshift facilities to become a centre of cutting-edge research and innovative teaching of international standing. Throughout the course of this amazing development, faculty members in the Department have maintained an unwavering dedication to providing for our students an all-round training, especially for the undergraduate lot during their formative years. Indeed, to aid us to achieve such goal, various programs have been installed to allow them to gain wide exposure in different aspects of a modern education in chemistry. However, the spiraling costs in recent years for the upkeep of these operations greatly exceed the capability of our meagre budgets which lag far behind inflation. We therefore turn to you for help to ease the financial burden of the Department to keep alive these undergraduate-oriented programs as well as to expand them to keep pace with the latest advances in chemistry.
The three-fold purpose of the sat Fund is to (1) recognize academic achievements of Chemistry undergraduate students; (2) provide support for student activities and (3) enrich international exposure and motivate students to explore their potential through learning abroad, exchange programs, summer research and placement/internship. You may consider the following options:
- You may wish to donate scholarship/prize by a group of alumni of a particular year. If the amount reaches $5,000, one student will receive an award designated as “Year 19xx (or 20xx) Chemistry Alumni Academic Excellence Award”. However, if the amount is under HK$5,000, we will pool all other donations and form a “Chemistry Alumni Academic Excellence Award” as one of the student sponsorships.
- You may also wish to donate scholarship/prize of HK$50,000 or above for a 5 years’ scholarship scheme. You have the discretion to give a name for the scholarship. Department of Chemistry will award HK$10,000 on an annual basis for 5 years to eligible applicant as a recognition of outstanding academic achievement. The donation can be given one-off or in 5-year installments, each of which should not be less than HK$10,000. The naming of the scholarship is subject to endorsement by the Department Board of Chemistry. The Board may also accept other modes of donation if it deems appropriate.
We take pleasure in announcing that the scholarship/prize scheme will be set into motion in the 2018/19 academic year as an encouragement to our students in good academic standing. This scheme will also provide a good opportunity for our students to take up summer research in overseas universities or an exchange program in leading institutes, so that they can gain invaluable experience and exposure to forefront research.
Should you have any enquiry, please feel free to contact Ms. Felicia Wong of the Department of Chemistry at chemistry@cuhk.edu.hk or (852)-39436343 for details.
Every donation will make a difference, regardless of amount. And your generosity will benefit our students in many aspects in their academic and personal developments.
