Safe prescription of Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs
Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are widely used medications and valuable agents in many clinical scenarios. However, the serious adverse reactions of NSAIDs including hypertension, cardiovascular disease, kidney injury and GI complications cannot be underestimated. The study “Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) therapy in patients with hypertension, cardiovascular, renal or gastrointestinal comorbidities: joint APAGE/APLAR/APSDE/APSH/APSN/PoA recommendations” was a systematic literature review of randomized control trials and observational studies to develop a set of multidisciplinary recommendations for the safe prescription of NSAIDs. It suggested that NSAIDs should be avoided in patients with treatment-resistant hypertension, high risk of cardiovascular disease and severe chronic kidney disease. The study emphasized proper patient selections, selection of a specific agent and the appropriate use of ulcer prophylaxis in order to minimize the adverse effect of NSAIDs.
