Fight against Cardiovascular Disease: An Online Knowledge Transfer Project
Project Brief
Cardiovascular disease, encompassing coronary heart disease, stroke and hypertension, is far and away from the leading cause of death in Hong Kong. Many of the risk factors for cardiovascular disease, such as tobacco use, physical inactivity and an unhealthy diet, can be corrected through lifestyle modifications. Successful lifestyle changes require individual commitment and support from a healthcare team. This two-year online knowledge transfer project is a new initiative designed to empower the public to prevent and control the occurrence of cardiovascular disease. A website developed for free public access includes the five following components.
- Up-to-date health information on managing cardiovascular disease.
- Essential tips for preventing and combating cardiovascular disease.
- Creative learning through online computer games on cardiovascular disease management.
- Reflection on real-life video clips and celebrity interviews.
- Individualised health advice delivered through email answers from healthcare professionals.
Major Benefits
This is a culturally relevant website that provides information designed to facilitate the prevention and management of cardiovascular disease amongst the Hong Kong public (and Chinese populations worldwide). The benefits of accessing the website are not confined to the attainment of relevant healthcare knowledge, but also include the receipt of support from and communication with healthcare professionals.
In addition to publicising the website amongst the general public, the knowledge transfer project is promoted to patient self-help groups, community rehabilitation networks, professional nursing associations and health centres. The aim is to provide knowledge and training for nursing staff and students and community healthcare providers to enable them to engage in the promotion and management of cardiovascular disease in the community.
In addition to the website, we also arrange health talks, health exhibitions, education booklets and health checks for the public. More than 1,000 members of the public and healthcare professionals have benefited from these various activities, and the website has to date attracted more than 157,000 hits.
