Global trend of Young-Onset Colorectal Cancer

Colorectal cancer is the most common gastrointestinal malignancy and the third leading cause of cancer-associated death in the world. The incidence of young-onset colorectal cancer is reported to be increasing in the Western world and the study “Increasing Trend in Young-Onset Colorectal Cancer in Asia: More Cancers in Men and More Rectal Cancers” finds the first evidence showing that the trend is not confined to the West. As the trend is probably global, more work needs to be done to identify the risk factors and new measures taken for screening programmes (Am J Gastroenterol. 2019 Feb;114(2):322-329. doi: 10.14309/ajg.0000000000000133).

Prof Sung is the Director of our Institute of Digestive Disease and his research interests include intestinal bleeding, Helicobacter Pylori, peptic ulcer, colorectal cancer and other cancers related to the digestive system.
